Are you into finding the best books that will stir the inner Sherlock Holmes in you? We have here a review of the top 20 books in Amazon whose stories revolve around unlocking a mystery while the characters are experiencing some thrill and suspense.

1. The Perfect Couple

There is a sense that the book is an amalgamation of different stories packed into one. It is precisely this incoherence in the plot which confuses the reader. What is supposed to be “whodunit” mystery thriller fails to live up to its promise and falls flat due to its formulaic storyline. Moreover, there is also not enough character development which will make readers care for them. Each character could have been more fleshed out to make them more interesting but unfortunately were not fully fleshed out. After reading the book, you feel a bit cheated because it gave you only half of the story you were expecting for.

2. The Wife Between Us

With its interesting plot twists and turns, the book gives readers exactly what they want. As you immerse yourself in the story, the more you will ask yourself, “What is happening?” This will force you to reread the previous pages to enable you to connect the dots. You might think the book’s blurb has already given away the plot but it actually does not and only serves to deepen the mystery. On the other hand, as the authors try to pull the rug from under you with more plot twists, they may come off as too elaborate. Although there is a major turning point towards the middle of the story that will hit you like a sucker punch, there are also some portions that are quite predictable.

3. The Other Woman

With espionage written all over it, this book by Gabriel Allon is definitely a page-turner. A Russian intelligence officer is being recruited by Israel and the West as an informant. But it does not take long for the Russian agent’s comrades to learn about his misdeeds and go after him. His Israeli and British handlers try to extract him but a Russian assassin gets to him first and murders him. This is where the story’s pace picks up, as the blame for the Russian spy’s murder falls on the Israeli’s head of intelligence. Because the story is anchored on real-life events, readers might feel they are reading both a fiction and non-fiction novel. Although the plot is not something that will bring you to cheer, it will still leave you with a sense of hope.

4. Depth of Winter

This book by Craig Johnson features law enforcer Walt Longmire. He is someone who does not quite live up to expectations. A good novel is supposed to make its readers turn pages its quickly. This does not. This is quite surprising considering that the storyline holds so much promise: Thomas Bitarde, Longmire’s longtime arch-nemesis abducted Cady, flees to Mexico and challenges the hero to rescue his daughter. Unfortunately, the story does not pan out as intended for a couple of reasons. First, the book did not bring in the regular cast of characters which fans were expecting.  Second, the plot does not make the readers suspend their disbelief. And third, the book is unable to convince readers that it is actually a mystery novel.

This book is a collection of five different novels – “Red Harvest,” “The Benson Murder Case,” “Little Caesar,” “House Without a Key,” The Roman Hat Mystery” and “Red Harvest” –  which gained popularity in the 1920s. Although the original stories are preserved, illustrations and annotations by Leslie S. Klinger, who is a recipient of an Edgar award, have been added to give more meaning to each narrative. Despite being old stories, their respective plot has remained interesting because of how Klinger added meat to it. Therefore, even if you are a young bookworm who is curious about what the five books can offer, you will surely enjoy each time you hop from one page to another.

Kate Atkinson has proven her depth and creativity as a writer in this novel. While working as a BBC radio producer, the supposed to be a peaceful world of Julie is rocked. Figures from her past are around to ruin her life.  Despite the complexity of facts, the author was able to present each detail with clarity that the reader’s interest and excitement are kept.

10. The President is Missing

Former US President Bill Clinton and a New York Times best-selling author James Patterson combined forces to produce this compelling thriller. In a nutshell, the story is about an attempt the cripple the United States by erasing all of the nation’s electronic files and bringing it back to the “Dark Ages,” which is also the code or virus for the devious conspiracy. The storyline, therefore, revolves on the race to locate the virus and avert the chilling plot from becoming a reality. With Mr. Clinton as one of the co-authors, the novel comes off as highly credible. There is a tendency, however, for the book to be too preachy at times due to its lengthy polemics. Much of these are unnecessary and does not really help to move the story forward.

19. The Outsider

With this novel, Stephen King is starting to move away from his verbose prose and now utilizing more direct language which makes it easier to draw in the reader. As a result, the story hits the ground running and does not take long to build up. Make no mistake, it is still vintage King as the narrative kicks off with a mind-boggling murder. This is where the plot shifts and elements from the netherworld start to make their presence felt. But the plot has already been established so there is a logical transition from a procedural crime incident to the supernatural realm. But despite being a page-turner, Mr. King still delights in giving misleading hints which take you in different directions. If the gauge of this book’s readability is the tension it creates among readers, it succeeds in doing so.

20. The Woman in the Window

Up front, the book gives its readers a classic feel. The story, however, is actually a union of the old and the new; while it is clearly a Hitchcock-inspired thriller, it presents the contemporary world now dominated by social media and cutting-edge technology. But what makes the novel impressive is the manner in which the author is able to utilize tone and language that harks back to the old black and white noir movies. While the book presents a heady atmosphere, there is still a sense of audacity that pervades through the storyline. If you are looking for an articulate and cerebral escapism, this book by A. J. Finn is for you.
